Like most kayaks, the Johnson Escape Touring Boat hull is made out of polyethylene, yet with this boat the quality is so high that it looks and feels more like smooth gel coat fiberglass. This is very thick heavy duty commercial quality plastic, with a smooth finish. This not a typical thin-wall consumer kayak with a crackle  / orange-peel finish. Total quality. I have never seen any kayak like this before.

Note: While the Johnson Escape Touring Boat is certainly a sit-on kayak style watercraft and in our opinion the greatest kayak ever made, it is officially classified as a boat or small craft. For this reason, adults are not necessarily required to wear life vests. However, it is our recommendation that life vests be worn by all occupants at all times in any small craft. Also, among other things, running lights would not likely be allowed if this watercraft were officially classified as a kayak.

* Boat accommodates a carrying capacity of 3 persons / 465 lbs. maximum. However since two padded seats are provided, a 3rd passenger must sit elsewhere.

** For intermittent salt water use, up to approx. 8 hours per session. Boat should be rinsed after each use. For more frequent or continuously submerged salt water use, various motor upgrades / options are available.
